WDS teamed up with some great local dance groups to present another well received Joining Forces Show. There was something for everyone, and performers of all ages from 8 to nearly 80.

All our guest groups were amazed at the professionalism of our crew and our organisation, and were impressed at the quality of our choreography and dancing.

Many of them didn’t realize what a fantastic studio we have on their own doorstep. So we may see some new faces joining us next term!

The album of photographs is already on-line and the DVD order form is also available.

Rainy Party in the Park

Shani and Tunde lead an intrepid team into the wilds of Woking Park to perform their Zumba and Contemporary dances from the show, at a wet Party in the Park (last year’s wellies would’ve been useful this time typically).

Fun was had by all, albeit of the damp and chilly variety. Well done everyone!

WDS 20th Anniversary!

Next year is Woking Dance Space’s 20th Anniversary. Nope, we can’t believe we’re that old either. So we have launched a couple of fun projects to mark the occasion.

Firstly, we are going to produce a WDS Cookbook which will contain recipes donated by our rather creative dancers. There’s a box in the studio if you have something to include, or you can email it to us of course. We hope to get it printed and ready by the beginning of 2015, so keep your eyes and whisks peeled.

Secondly we are going to produce a special “Best Of” WDS calendar for 2015. This will contain lots of cool photos from our past, and will also have key dates already put in (so you can never forget the dates of rehearsals of course). So look out for that too as we approach the New Year.

We are also designing a notebook, some bags, T-shirts and mugs. Keep your eyes open for more details later in the year.

If you have any ideas chat to a Trustee, we are open to all suggestions.

Wednesday 13th to Saturday 16th May

As it is our 20th Anniversary, our next show will be a celebration of the journey WDS has made over the two decades, as well as a showcase for all the best of what we can do now.

So we are putting into the mix a few of the past numbers – one for each genre – with as many of the original cast as possible! There will obviously be a chance to join in these special Retrospective numbers so keep an eye out for details.

We will also be rummaging through the archives for those old photos (and yes they were originally called “prints”) and hopefully displaying a good selection during the show as backdrops. Just watch those Trustees cringe...

Changes and New Teachers

Gill Barnes has decided to stop teaching her daytime classes, and has handed over the mantle of Wardrobe Mistress. We will be very sorry to lose her from the team, as she has done a fantastic job of keeping order in the cupboards and inspiring our daytime ladies. She has said that she intends to keep on coming to classes so we hope you will still get to see her around the studio.

Zelda Whittern and Gen Howgate are stepping into the Wardrobe role – lots of good luck ladies!

A hearty, if slightly late, welcome to our new Thursday teachers Emily Little, Jen Dyson and Amy Oxley. All three ladies come from exciting performing backgrounds, and their classes are already part of the fabric of WDS. Amy is also taking on the Daytime tap and jazz classes, so do come along and give her a hand in keeping Tuesday our most active day of the week.

Everyone give them a smile and a helping hand when you see them!

Beginners Classes

We have decided to rethink the way we handle absolute beginner classes at the studio.

Traditionally we have run beginner classes as normal classes, usually at 6:30pm and in the case of ballet, as a discounted course. However, we have found it difficult to encourage beginners to move on once they have achieved the next level, and as a result the classes often stop being appropriate to total beginners.

So, from January next year, we are going to convert the Wednesday 6:30 class to a Basic Ballet class (roughly RAD Grade 2/3), move the Monday 6:30 Tappers into the 7:30 class and have a NEW rolling programme of Absolute Beginners classes in the early Monday time slot. Genres will change between Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and any other basic course that there is demand for.

Each course would run for 6 weeks, if enough participants sign up in advance. Spread the news!
